Week in the News- March 31, 2008

Parents, our class is need of extra snacks, treats, and peppermints.  Donations are much appreciated!  Thanks for everything that has been brought in!

What we are learning . . .

Reading:  We have started the last of the Shiloh trilogy, Saving

Shiloh

.  This is an AR book.  The children can take an AR test.  Your child has set their AR goal.  Every student has completed the STAR test to get a range of reading levels during Lab Tech. This information is located on your child’s library card. 

Spelling:  We had our Unit 26 pre-test on Monday.  Students have their lists of words to study in their spelling section of their notebook.  If your child missed 2 or less on the pre-test, they have been given a challenge list of words as well.   Their spelling test will be Friday, April 4.  There will NOT be a challenge test this week.

English/Writing:  We took a DOL test last Friday.  We have now switched the format to a more CRCT like test.  Practice tests go home every week for practice!!!!  We are now starting a cumulative review of English for the CRCT.  We are still studying working on different types of punctuation marks and dictionary skills.  We are continuing to work on adverbs and adjectives, too.  We will continue to cover nouns, pronouns, verbs, subjects, and predicates.  DOL tests are usually every Friday.  Their DOL test will be Friday, April 4.  We are starting to work on fourth nine weeks writing piece which deals with persuasive writing.

Math:    We have started Unit 4 in math compacting. We will start with perimeter and area.  We will review fractions, decimals, and measurement.  We are continuing to work on long division and multiplication as well.  We are working on place value, value, comparing numbers and rounding, too.  Addition and subtraction with regrouping is also a focus.  Keep practicing those flash cards!!!!!  Math quizzes are usually every Friday.

Science: Mrs. Rademacher is continuing the unit on space and will cover the phases of the moon.

Social Studies:  We have finished studying colonization and the pilgrims and will move onto the French and Indian War briefly before beginning The American Revolution.    They will have a test on the French and Indian Thursday, April 3.  A study guide was given on Monday.

What we are learning . . .

Reading:  We will start next week with the last of the Shiloh trilogy, Saving

Shiloh

.  This is an AR book.  The children can take an AR test.  Your child has set their AR goal.  Every student has completed the STAR test to get a range of reading levels during Lab Tech. This information is located on your child’s library card.  We are covering Unit 12 in Wordly Wise.  The students will have a vocabulary test on Monday, March 17.   

Spelling:  We had our Unit 23 pre-test on Monday.  Students have their lists of words to study in their spelling section of their notebook.  If your child missed 2 or less on the pre-test, they have been given a challenge list of words as well.   Their next spelling test will be Friday, March 14.

English/Writing:  We took a DOL test last Friday.  We have now switched the format to a more CRCT like test.  Practice tests go home every week for practice!!!!  We are now starting a cumulative review of English for the CRCT.  We are still studying working on different types of punctuation marks and dictionary skills. We are continuing to work on adverbs and adjectives, too.  We will continue to cover nouns, pronouns, verbs, subjects, and predicates.  DOL tests are usually every Friday.  Their DOL test will be Friday, March 14.  We are starting to work on third nine weeks writing piece which deals with informational writing.

Math:    We are finishing Unit 3 in math compacting.   We will be covering fractions, decimals, and measurement.  We are continuing to work on long division and multiplication as well.  We are working on place value, value, comparing numbers and rounding, too.  Addition and subtraction with regrouping is also a focus.  Keep practicing those flash cards!!!!!  Math quizzes are usually every Friday.

Science: Mrs. Rademacher is continuing the unit on space and will cover the phases of the moon. Their travel space brochures were due Monday, March 10!!!!!

Parents- a class list went home last week for valentines.  Thursday, your child may bring in a decorated shoe box or bag for exchanging of valentines.  Please keep treats or snacks to a minimum.  Cookies or cupcakes are fine.
