                                                             Ms. Adams' class

Ms. Adams' Corner:   I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! Spring is in the air!  Parents, please look for graded papers in your child's bookbag today. Just a few reminders and tidbits for our class store:  Parents, thanks so much for the donations for the class store.  Everything is much appreciated!!!

What we are learning:

Reading: We are reading the novel  Shiloh.  This an AR book. Activities and comprehension quizzes will be given throughout the novel study. 

Spelling: We will take the Unit 20 pre-test on Monday. The students keep their list of words to study in their spelling section of their notebook. If your child missed two or less on the pre-test, they have been given a challenge list of words as well. There will be a challenge test this Friday.  The Unit 20 post-test is Friday, March 20.

English/Writing:  DOL tests are usually every Friday. We have switched the test format to a more CRCT like test. We are studying a cumalative review of all grammar to prepare for the CRCT.  We will continue with a review of adverbs, verb tenses, adjectives, verbs, simple and complete predicates, subjects, pronouns, common and proper nouns, and types of sentences too.Their next DOL test will be Friday, March 20.  We will also be working on how to write an informational piece.  With informational writing, the students will be learning how to use research, etc. in a report style paper.

Math: We are starting unit 4 in math compacting. The skills that we will be covering are 3-D geometry, peremiter, area, volume, and multiplication of decimals.  Fractions, 2-D geometry and an extension of multiplication and division, place value, value, comparing numbers, rounding, graphing, addition and subtraction with regrouping is also a focus. Keep practicing those flashcards!!!! Math quizzes are usually every Friday.

Science: Mrs. Caden is teaching science. She is teaching the phases of the moon and space. 

Social Studies: We are studying The American Revolutionary War.  We will be using chapter 7 in the book.  Activities and quizzes will be given throughout the unit.

Week in the News- Ms. Adams' Fourth Grade

It was wonderful meeting everyone at Sneak-A-Peek.  I am very excited about our class this year.  I am also very excited for our class to be working with with a student teacher, Mrs. Fauscett, from Kennesaw State University.  I just know we are going to great things with our class.

Information about our subjects:

Spelling:  You will not recieve a list of words for memorization each week.  Your child will take a pre-test on Monday.  The post test will occur every Friday.  We will begn next week with a pretest, so expect a post test next Friday.  If your child misses 0-2 words on the pretest, he/she will receive a challenge list.  This list is made of the first ten words from our vocabulary packets(Wordly Wise) or other subject areas.  There will be a challenge list for the first test. 

Wordly Wise:  This is a set of vocabulary words that your child will receive about every other week.  The practice is lengthy and I want to be sure the children are ready for the test.  We will start next Monday.  The unit of words will be in the reading section of your child's notebook.  A test will given as we complete each unit.  It will be composed of sentences where the children must fill in the blanks with the proper word.  A word bank will be supplied for each test. 

Reading:  We are very fortunate to have literally hundreds of books at our disposal.  We will be reading many fiction and nonfiction selections.  Reading is also incorporated into all subject areas.  In science, social studies, and even math, you will see much reading taking place.  My class will be learning a great deal about taking notes, summarizing, making inferences, reading for detail, point of view, and author's purpose. I will assign several books reports as the year progresses.  Accelerated reader will start as soon as the media center tells us. 

Math:  We will begin math compacting next Monday.  The first unit will be pretested tomorrow. I will send you information about your child's class in the agenda later this week or next Monday.  The first unit will cover skills such as number sense, place value, rounding, multiplication, division, and graphing. 

Writing/Grammar:  We will be taking a first writing sample soon.  We will do this atleast four times during the year for their writing portfolio notebook.  We will be writing a great deal in our class.  I will be emphasizing writing in complete sentences on tests, using more descriptive language, writing in paragraphs, etc.  We teach writing in a step by step way which really seems to get the going well.  We will be studying how to write a bibliograhy.  Toward the end of the year, your child will have their research paper assignment.  It will incorporate social studies and writing.  We will also be working daily on English grammar.  There is usually a grammar test every Friday. 

Social Studies/Science/Health:  We will begin discussing map skills and landforms in Social Studies.  Mrs. Caden will be teaching science. 

Miscellaneous:  Every Monday, your child will be given a weekly evaluation.  This evaluation tells how your child is doing with their work and behavior.  Please review the information, sign, and return the sheet.  I will keep it in your child's class folder.  About every 2-3 weeks, the sheet will also provide you with subject averages. 

Grading:  We go to A's and B's in fourth grade. The scale is as follows:

100-90    A

89-80      B

79-74      C

73-70      D

69 and below F

Room Moms and AR Moms

I have had some volunteers, but if you didn't get to Sneak-A-Peek and would like to put your name in just let me know.

A sample of the weekly status report is attached - You will get one of these every Monday. You will need to sign it and return it to school on Tuesday. This is just a sample and you don't need to sign it today.

Please be sure to sign the Agenda DAILY, the weekly stauts report and any D or F papers on Monday night.

Please join the PTA. It is a great way to support our school.

If your child is taking medication, YOU must bring it to the clinic. No child should be sent to school with medicine. Your child may take cough drops to the clinic on his/her own with a permission letter from you.

What we are learning . . .

Reading:  We have started the last of the Shiloh trilogy, Saving

Shiloh

.  This is an AR book.  The children can take an AR test.  Your child has set their AR goal.  Every student has completed the STAR test to get a range of reading levels during Lab Tech. This information is located on your child’s library card. 

Spelling:  We had our Unit 26 pre-test on Monday.  Students have their lists of words to study in their spelling section of their notebook.  If your child missed 2 or less on the pre-test, they have been given a challenge list of words as well.   Their spelling test will be Friday, April 4.  There will NOT be a challenge test this week.

English/Writing:  We took a DOL test last Friday.  We have now switched the format to a more CRCT like test.  Practice tests go home every week for practice!!!!  We are now starting a cumulative review of English for the CRCT.  We are still studying working on different types of punctuation marks and dictionary skills.  We are continuing to work on adverbs and adjectives, too.  We will continue to cover nouns, pronouns, verbs, subjects, and predicates.  DOL tests are usually every Friday.  Their DOL test will be Friday, April 4.  We are starting to work on fourth nine weeks writing piece which deals with persuasive writing.

Math:    We have started Unit 4 in math compacting. We will start with perimeter and area.  We will review fractions, decimals, and measurement.  We are continuing to work on long division and multiplication as well.  We are working on place value, value, comparing numbers and rounding, too.  Addition and subtraction with regrouping is also a focus.  Keep practicing those flash cards!!!!!  Math quizzes are usually every Friday.

Science: Mrs. Rademacher is continuing the unit on space and will cover the phases of the moon.

Social Studies:  We have finished studying colonization and the pilgrims and will move onto the French and Indian War briefly before beginning The American Revolution.    They will have a test on the French and Indian Thursday, April 3.  A study guide was given on Monday.

What we are learning . . .

Week in the News- January 8, 2007

                                   Ms. Adams’ Class

Ms. Adams’ corner:  I hope everyone had a relaxing and wonderful holiday break!  Thanks so much for the gifts and restaurant certificates!  I used all of them over the break!  Thanks to our room moms and parents who had the opportunity to participate in the holiday party. What we are learning . . .

Reading

:  We are getting ready to start the novel

Shiloh

.  This is an AR book.  The children can take an AR test.  Your child has set their AR goal.  Every student has completed the STAR test to get a range of reading levels during Lab Tech. This information is located on your child’s library card.  We are working on Wordly Wise Unit 9 this week.  Their vocabulary test will be next Monday, January 14.

Spelling:  We will take our unit 16 pre-test on Tuesday, January 8.   Students have their lists of words to study in their spelling section of their notebook.  If your child missed 2 or less on the pre-test, they have been given a challenge list of words as well.   Spelling tests are every Friday.  Their test will be Friday, January 11.

English/Writing:  We took a DOL test last Friday.  We have now switched the format to a more CRCT like test.  We are studying adverbs this week.  We are continuing to work on adjectives, too.  We will continue to cover nouns, pronouns, verbs, subjects, and predicates.  DOL tests are usually every Friday.  Their DOL test will be Friday, January 11.   We are also finishing up on our second writing piece this year.  We are learning how to respond to types of literature. 

Math:    We started Unit 3 in math compacting today.  We will be covering fractions, decimals, and measurement.  We are continuing to work on long division and multiplication as well.  We are working on place value, value, comparing numbers and rounding, too.  Addition and subtraction with regrouping is also a focus.  Keep practicing those flash cards!!!!!  Math quizzes are usually every Friday.

Science: Mrs. Rademacher is covering the unit on Light and Sound. 

Social Studies:  We are now studying colonization and the pilgrims.

Character Kid of the Week:  Congratulations to DAKOTA BISHOP for displaying HUMILITY at Still Elementary the week of December 17!  Way to go!
