NOVAC'S NEWS

So much to do and so little time!  The students' Bag-it Book Reports were wonderful.  They really enjoyed presenting them to the class.  It was a good experience for them. 

Our butterflies emerged on Monday from their chrysalises.  The students have really enjoyed writing up their observations.  We released the butterflies on today.  Now, that was fun!  Our bean plants are growing 'like weeds'.  They're measuring, describing, and comparing in their plant logs daily.  In fact, the plants will be used as props for our play.  Speaking of which...

Because of the rain, the field days were adjusted and so was our play.  We will perform our play on MONDAY, MAY 18th at 1:00 in the Media Center.  Please mark you calendars for this delightful event.

We're in the midst of individually retesting all their reading to measure growth from August to May.  The math unit post test is coming up in their math classes and there are many other loose ends that need tying before we close our books.  Please try to have your child here on time and well rested so these last days can be enjoyable and memorable for them. 

I want to thank you, Parents, for all your support to make this a successful school year for your child.  I couldn't have done it without you!

During the last week of school, we will do special things in our classroom.  You will receive a letter regarding this as soon as I update it.  It doesn't require you to do anything or buy anything.  But, we'll try to make the last week fun for the students.

NOVAC'S NEWS

Whew!  We finished the CRCT and I know we did a fabulous job.  The students were such good listeners and tried their VERY best. 

We have MANY exciting events and projects in the coming four weeks of school. First of all, we will be performing a play for you, the parents, in May.  See the date and time down below.  This play will encompass reading, writing, art, math, social skills, and much more.  We're very excited about this project.   We also have the Fire Safety program for two days next week.  The firemen will be here with their lessons and the mock firehouse.  Our Scholastic Book Fair is the whole week of May 4-8.   Field Day is May 8th.  There will be a special memorial and dedication to Coach Wes Jones on May 14th.  The last day of school is May 22nd.

NOVAC'S NEWS

Thank you for all the lovely Teacher Appreciation gifts.  The flowers, candy, and other treasures were so beautiful.  I feel blessed to have such a wonderful class this year.  Your children are delightful.

This week begins our Fire Safety program.  We'll have firemen visiting here two days this week and two more at the end of April.  They wil do lessons on fire safety.  It's a great program.  The firemen do an awesome job every year.

We have also begun to review for the CRCT.  Those dates for second grade are the week of April 20-24th.  You can prepare your child best by using good practices at home such as a 'nourishing' breakfast every day and at least 10 hours sleep at night.  Children need protein in the morning with their fruits and grains.  Donuts and toast won't do the trick for their brains to function at their best.  Testing will begin at 8:00 sharp each day, so they need to be here, unpacked, settled, and ready at 7:50 when school starts.  I hope you and your have had some time since January to do the practice CRCT tests online.  That information was sent home in January.  In the meantime, we're practicing here and reviewing old skills. 

This Friday is Relay For Life Hat Day, Spirit Day, AND Jump Rope for Heart Day.  WHEW!  The children will Jump Rope for Heart in their PE classes.

Spring Break begins Friday at 2:15.  Have a safe and wonderful week with your child.  I know I will spend some special time with my baby granddaughter.  The week will fly by and so will the rest of the school year.

NOVAC'S NEWS

Happy St. Patrick's Day to you.  Did you know a little leprechaun visited today?  We had a story about a little Irish girl in New York who met a leprechaun.  We also did all kinds of 'Irish' work this morning.  

Now I want to brag about many of our students who have met and exceeded their AR goals already.  Tyler, Kellan, Leslie, Kaitlyn, Brian, and Jazlyn have all reached 100% or more.  Many students are VERY close to reaching theirs.  As a class, we are at 84.2%.  There are about 6 more weeks of AR.  I do think we can reach our class goal of 100% to earn the AR end of year prize.  I'm very proud of our students who work so hard.

Our new math unit began this week.  Look for the parent letter in the Thursday Folder explaining the standards.  We're doing multiplication first as it will be on the CRCT in April.

Don't forget the skating party on Thursday night.  Report cards also go home Thursday.

As the Irish say, "Have a glorious day."

I'm so sorry.  I forgot to mention two new students to our classroom.  They are Mary Grace and Johnathan.  We're so happy to have them join us for the rest of our year. 

NOVAC'S NEWS

Can you believe February is flying by so quickly?  We are so busy learning all about space and studying civil rights.  The students are truly engaged in class.  Our persuasive writing has been more fun than you can imagine.  So many opinions!  They are really getting better at giving good reasons why they think the way they do. 

"Welcome" to our new student, Mary Grace.  We are happy to have her join our class, making our total 19!  We also want to welcome Ms. Jordan Cantelmo as a paraprofessional and Ms. Kristin Marietta from KSU who will be spending some time this semester with us.

Next week we have EARLY RELEASE on Tuesday and our class FIELD TRIP on Wednesday.  One Wednesday, please have your child either wear the purple class t-shirt or any purple shirt if you have one.  On Tuesday, I will remind the children who ordered a school sack lunch and who is bringing lunch from home.  Hopefully, we'll have nice weather.  Be sure your child dresses  properly for the temperature and wears tennis shoes. 

Our third nine weeks of school ends on the 12th.  Report cards go home on the 19th. Then, the countdowns begin: to Spring Break, to CRCT, to the end of the school year.  AND, there's so much to do!  I'm sure we'll get it in and have fun doing it. 

We're running low on our classroom supplies.  If possible, please ask your child if he/she needs new crayons, folders, glue sticks, pencils, pens.  We also need more Kleenex.  Whatever you can send it would be greatly appreciated.  We still have 11 more weeks of school, but who's counting?

NOVAC'S NEWS

I hope everyone is enjoying the warm weather.  Count on it to change.  After all, it's spring.

As we finish up this quarter and end of unit tests, we are also enjoying many activities at school.  Our field trip last week was so much fun.  We walked on a trail around a pond looking at various plants and animal tracks and talking about their life cycles.  The guides also took us inside the old farm house where we saw MANY examples of the wildlife native to this area. This was our introduction to the science standards for the 4th quarter.  We also have been learning about the history of the American flag and flag etiquette.  We learned about Jimmy Carter, another of our famous Georgians.  We'll be starting our last math unit next week, which involves the 'concept' of multiplication, not the memorization of facts.  The next unit also involves addition and subtraction of four digit numbers.

NOVAC'S NEWS

February is upon us as well as the cold weather.  Although, this weekend looks promising for golf.  Speaking of weather, we go outside for recess unless it's in the 30's at lunchtime.  Please be sure your child has a coat.  I wouldn't want them sick and missing all our exciting learning activities at school.

Tonight is PTSA and second graders are performing.  They are to wear their purple class t-shirt or just a purple shirt and jeans.  They need to be in our classroom at 6:15.  They can wait with you if they arrive earlier.  Our program begins at 6:30.  Please stay afterwards and view the Science Fair in the Media Center.  Hope to see you tonight.

Thanks to several parents, 4 from our class, we will have new mailboxes for all the new classrooms in our school.  Everyone appreciates the generosity.  Our canned food drive for MUST Ministries, which ends tomorrow, did great.  We have collected MANY full boxes of food which will be delivered this weekend.  THANK YOU!  What a great bunch of parents Still has!

On Monday, your child will bring home a permission form for a field trip to a park in Austell.  This is a science program for the life cycles of plants, a part of our curriculum.  The program is done by Parks and Recreation. The cost is only $2.00 for the buses.  We will either bring lunches or purchase sack lunches from the Still Cafe.  Please return the envelopes and permission forms by Feb. 20th.  The trip is planned for March 4th. 

Just a quick reminder:  The Six Flags reading logs will be due Feb. 17th, the LAST day to turn them in. If you lost it, just write on paper each time your child reads and initial the times.  They must add up to 600 minutes.

Thank you for coming to your child's conference.  I enjoyed talking with you and sharing your child's work.  As always, if you ever have questions, please email me or drop me a note.

As we move into February, we will focus on Science, particulary space.  We will do many activites that integrate science, math, and writng.  

Please note in your child's Thursday Folder a reservation form DUE FEB. 4th.  This is for Friends and Family Day where you are invited to eat lunch with your child at school.  There will be a photographer available after lunch in the Media Center.                                                           The date for second grade is FEB. 12th at our regular lunch time.

Please remember Feb. 4th is EARLY RELEASE and Feb.. 5th is our PTA program.  Students wear jeans and class t shirt or a purple shirt.  They need to be in our classroom at 6:15 PM.

 

Novac's News

Welcome back after a three day weekend.  What a very special week we have!  Students ate lunch in the classroom and watched the Inauguration.  This fits right in with our study of government and laws, along with Civil Rights and MLK, Jr.   Your children will grow up to be the future leaders and let me tell you, they asked some really tough questions.  They are most aware of current events!  We're also studying how Jackie Robinson influenced racial equality in major league baseball.  He was born in Georgia, too!

Our SCHOOLWIDE Food Drive kicked off for MUST Ministries this week.  A group of teachers are sponsoring this through their sorority of women educators.  Please be generous.  Here are some suggestions that are sorely needed:  canned fruit, pasta, vegetables, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, soup, baby food, rice, and boxed meals.  Send items in to the classroom.  There are boxes in our hall to collect them.  The drive continues until Feb. 6th. 

Our class AR average is above 50%.  Unfortunately, the class didn't make it by the cutoff date.  Those who did individually were treated to donuts and juice from Mrs. Quick.  They really enjoyed this.  Hopefully, by the end we will meet the 100% goal and earn our class reward.

I'm looking forward to seeing all of you at conferences next week.  Please be on time as our 20 minutes will fly right by.  Many of you have other children whose conferences are back to back and you wouldn't want to be late for them.
