Congratulations to our Star of the Week, Jessica Donehoo.

We have enjoyed reading Mr. Popper’s Penguins as a shared fiction Reading this week. Nonfiction feature Reading has included Time for Kids, The Lighthouse Book and a variety of books during Guided Reading groups.

Next week we will continue to learn about Eleanor Roosevelt and map skills in Social Studies and adjectives and nonfiction writing in English. In cursive writing we began to learn our upper case letters. Math skills have included adding and subtracting fractions and decimals. We will continue to have Multiplication Fluency Fact Tests every Friday. Please assist your child in memorizing the facts at home. Please listen to your child read each night and study to be ready for A.R. tests.

News January 19, 2011

Congratulations to our Star of the week, Jada Mitchell. We have learned about fractions as a part of a  group in Math this week and have written snow stories in English . In Reading we have worked on features of nonfiction books. In Social Studies we have learned about Franklin Roosevelt . Next week we will study Eleanor Roosevelt and review branches of Government. Mrs. Jones taught a lesson on research skills and will teach a weekly lesson about research. Your children are also learning  research skills in the Computer Lab.   

  Please look for information to come home next week concerning a biography book report. Our genre of writing this nine weeks is nonfiction.

Happy New Year!

 Congratulations to our Star of the Week-  Nia Amlett

and our Terrific Kid - Jack Lapointe .

This week we studied nonfiction features with our Time for Kids and did individual Reading assessments testing fluency and comprehension. We learned about Mary Bethune who is an American hero in Social Studies and wrote about our New Year’s Resolutions. We worked on irregular verbs in Language and practiced cursive writing. In Math we explored fractions as parts of a whole and completed sort 17 in Spelling. We look forward to a presentation on The Regions of Georgia in the Media Center tomorrow.

 

Please remember to listen to your child read and sign the Reading sheet each night as this Reading and signature of part of homework each evening. Also, in order to keep your child safe, he or she needs to bring a note if there will be a change in transportation.

Congratulations to those who were able to complete the holiday challenge sheet and practice important skills during the holidays. Please continue to play Study Island at home. There are new activities and your child should have written his or her password and login in his or her agenda. Another good site with practice for Math facts and other skills is mathplayground.com .

Congratulations to our highest scorer for A.R. points: Sophia Rowan with 157 points!

Our class completed our Cobb County testing and entering into IRESPOND this week as well as our Response To Literature Writing. Your boys and girls also took our Math Benchmark and IMI test for the third quarter. We listened to Polar Express and drank hot cocoa with our Book Buddies and went to Story time with Mrs. Hallmark in the Media Center.

Thanks to those of you who were able to send in food for our holiday celebration today. Tomorrow we will complete our shared reading of Lucky Charms and Birthday Wishes and do holiday problem solving in Math.

Please look for your child’s A.R. record to come home in his or her Work Sample folder this Friday.  Please participate in our Administrator’s Holiday Challenge. Today your child brought home a yellow sheet featuring a Christmas tree.  Upon completing the sheet and returning by January 10, your child will receive a treat from our administrators. Please fill in an ornament for every 20 minutes that your child reads, practices Math facts or does activities on Study Island during the holidays.

Third Graders  have been busy completing county checkpoint tests this week and entering them into I Respond remote system. We have completed Language Arts and Math tests and will take the Science checkpoint tomorrow Friday, December 16. Next Monday we will have our Math Benchmark test for the second nine weeks. Please allow your child to recognize coins and practice counting change. For example: If he/she buys a book for seven dollars and 50 cents  and gives the clerk ten dollars how much change will he or she receive ? Practice counting back the change.  Continue to practice multiplication facts and read and get Reading sheet signed each night. Watch for A. R. reports to come home next week.

After much practice with reading various texts and writing Responses to Literature, we are writing our State Assessment piece. We will continue to read Birthday wishes for shared reading and work on verbs and subjects and predicates in Language. Guided Reading will include skills such as prediction and reading for details. We will finish our Health unit on Drug Abuse Prevention and enjoy a Special Story time with our Book Buddies.

Thank you to Mrs. Hagler and Mrs. Lapointe for their work with our holiday party on December 21.  You should have received an email with details from Mrs.Hagler.

Please remember there is a new bus policy described on the Cobb County Website. If your child is going home on another bus he/she must have the completed form from the website instead of a handwritten note.

Congratulations to out Terrific Kid Kaitlyn Colvin and our Star Shelby Hagler.

We enjoyed reading Lucky Charms and Birthday Wishes as our share reading and learned more about main idea and supporting details in Reading Groups. We introduced division with interactive Promethean activities and partner Math activities and Literature connections. We wrote a response to Literature after reading The Wednesday Surprise and will write another independent response for State Assessment next week. We have concluded our standards in Science for the nine weeks and will be learning about the Health standards that deal with prevention of drug abuse.

Third graders will be completing Cobb County Checkpoint tests next week in addition to the Math Benchmark test on Monday December 19. Please continue to listen to your child read each night and sign the Reading sheet. This nightly reading enables your child to improve his or her reading ability and prepare for the CRCT.

Reminders: In order to ensure safety for your child please remember that your child must have a note to change transportation. Also please remember that it is a school wide rule that parents must check out a student from the office instead of directly from the classroom. In order to check out from the office, you must sign him or her out prior to 1:45.

Third grade holiday party is December 21 from 12:00-1:00.  Please send an inexpensive wrapped 100 piece puzzle by Dec. 20 if you would like for your child to participate in a puzzle exchange. One of our Room Moms will be contacting you concerning refreshments and paper products if you would like to contribute.

Updates

Remember Santa Secret Shop and Pancake Breakfast is Sat. Dec. 10th from 8:30 until 11:00. Your child can shop for gifts at that time. There will also be a time for third grade shopping on Thursday December 8 at 10:00 a. m. Your child brought home an envelope and detailed information last Friday in his or her  work sample folders. He  or she needs to bring money in that envelope in order to shop on Thursday.

Your child brought home his/her ITBS scores today Thursday , December 1^st.  In order to learn more about the scores visit the school website for an explanation and details about interpretations of the scores. On Wednesday your child also should have presented you a yellow sheet with information about a Geometry project due by December 20.   There should be an example or definition for each term on the sheet. We have been spending much time learning vocabulary for our Geometry unit. We continue to take timed tests for Multiplication. Please assist your child in learning these facts with flashcards and computer websites such as Aplus Math.com. We will also send home some other activities for practice as we continue to practice at school. Please remember that reading and then signing nightly the Reading sheet is part of our homework.

Your children enjoyed our edible Science project this week when we made and ate “soil.” We created bedrock, subsoil and topsoil using cookies, pudding and gummy worms. Next week we will continue our Science unit on soil and writing Responses to Literature. We will learn about division, money and Geometry in Math as well as problem solving with Multiplication problem solving. Our shared reading will be Birthday Wishes and our skills in Guided Reading groups will be Main Idea and Supporting Details.

Congratulations to Brant Mueller our Star of the Week. Please continue to read with your child over the Thanksgiving holidays. We enjoyed our Green School /Watershed  Mangement puppet show this week. We will learn more about our Response to Literature genre of Writing next week. Please continue to practice Multiplication facts with flashcards and online . We will review in class and have weekly timed tests but will spend most of our instructional time on Standards involving Geometry skills. 

In Science we will learn about soil and will learn about Main Ideas and supporting details in Guided Reading groups. Thanksgiving holidays will be from Nov.21-Nov.25. Family Science night is December 1 form 6:30-8:30. Enjoy your holiday !
