English- DOL this week.

 

Reading

-Our current novel is

My Side of the Mountain. I’m planning a very special day for the students during this novel. It will be Friday, March 27. To “become one” with the book, the class will spend the whole day in the woods behind the school. A letter from the room moms will be coming home soon explaining donations that we’ll need (mostly food items). I explained this to the students, so ask them for an even more “heads up”. Also, Mrs. Hutmacher, a parent of a former student, will be visiting us around lunch and take the students on a tour of our nature trail, noting edible and medicinal plants. The students will need to bring blankets/sleeping bags that day as well as dress in layers. More info to come.

 

Math-beginning the last 9 weeks unit!!!

The students will also be finishing up the “TorchTest” this week. This is the MATH CRCT review test checklist that I distributed

during conference week. It will increase from 70 to 100 questions. PLEASE use this as a review with your child, especially over Spring Break!!! This will help keep them sharp since it is RIGHT BEFORE THE TEST!!!

 

 

CRCT REVIEW

Remember, if you are looking for a great review tool, you might want to purchase the CRCT test prep booklet that I showed during conference week. It is a green workbook with a picture of

Georgia

on the cover. It should say CRCT.

CLASS NEWSPAPER

We will be meeting this Tuesday @

9:30

in the computer lab. If at all possible, I would like for the students to be prepared to publish their article by Friday of this week. That means they will need to use any “spare” minutes to complete this. The students LOVE working on their articles, so I don’t think it will be any problem.  After this issue, we won’t be meeting for newspaper until after Spring Break. Our focus will be on the CRCT. I HOPE we can publish one more edition before the conclusion of school. OUCH, that was difficult to say.

This seems to be a very tough unit. STUDY!!!

 

I don’t know how, but I want the class to begin reading My Side of the Mountain. We will probably begin reading it in class this week, and dig more indepth beginning next week. Next week the students will probably start having reading assignments from the book.

 

Math-Closing down on the end of 9 weeks.

The posttest will be before the end of the 9 weeks which is March 12.

CLASS NEWSPAPER

We will be meeting Tuesdays @ 9:40 in the classroom to help guide the students for the focus on their next newspaper. I have the computer lab reserved until spring break. The students are becoming more independent all the time. I’m very proud of them. We should be publishing our next edition right around the corner. WHEW AGAIN!!!

 

 

BIOGRAPHY REPORT

DON’T FORGET!!! Biography reports are due Monday, Feb. 30. We will try to present some of them each day for the entire week. The only day that may cause some problems is Weds. 4^th due to the writing assessment. ALL need to be prepared to present. They can bring in all their props and scripts in a bag and leave them, that way when it is their turn, they’ll be prepared. I’m looking forward to their presentations! J J

 

PATRIOTISM FIELD TRIP RESCHEDULED

 

            So sorry for the delay in the field trip, but the museum didn’t have an occupancy permit. The field trip has tentatively for Monday, March 30^th.

English- We will be working on another week of DOL, BUT, I will not be giving a quiz on Friday!!!

CLASS NEWSPAPER

We will be meeting Tuesdays @ 9:40 in the classroom to help guide the students for the focus on their next newspaper. I have the computer lab reserved until spring break. The students are becoming more independent all the time. I’m very proud of them.

 

 

BIOGRAPHY REPORT

The students have had a lesson from Ms. Waddell on writing a bibliography. They’ve also had a couple of opportunities to research material in the media center. I’ve also shown them sample reports from previous students. I will show a video of a couple previous reports to give them an idea of what the presentation may look like, as well as the script they need to produce.

          I’ve reduced their homework load over the last couple of weeks and this week so they would have extra time to work on their report, AND to still do some independent reading to meet their AR GOAL.

 

PATRIOTISM FIELD TRIP RESCHEDULED

 

            Do to events beyond our control, we have had to reschedule the patriotism field trip to…probably the week before spring break. Therefore, Friday will be a ‘normal’ school day.

READING BOWL UPDATE

CAR RIDER SIGNS

Please remember to have car rider signs in the front windshield if you are picking your child up. This will speed up the process for all involved.

BIOGRAPHY REPORT

The students are bringing home their biography packet which includes a parent signature sheet, rubric, resources pages, etc… Please sign and return the top page. The rest is for you and your child. We will be using some class time for research so the students need to keep returning their packet to school each day, especially if you are using the same packet to work on at home.

   If they are changing their person to research, the students must inform me by the end of this week. Projects are due MONDAY, March 2.

FREE SIX FLAGS TICKETS

See the literature in the orange folder for your child to receive a free Six Flags ticket. They must read a minimum of 6 hours/360 minutes between Jan. 12 and Feb. 17 to qualify. As soon as they finish, return the form to me. DEADLINE: by Feb. 17!!!

 

CONFERENCE WEEK

Included in the orange folder are the conference week forms with dates and times. Please be flexible, as you always are, but if I need to reschedule, return the form with suggestions. If you have more than one child at Still, the teachers have already coordinated the times for sequential conferences.

 

Science- Our next focus is on heredity. Students will be using their text, along with handouts and notes during this unit. Test on Friday.

We’ve worked like “dogs”  to bring you our first class newspaper.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Class Party

 

Our class party will be this Thursday, 11:30-12:30. The students chose to spend the first 30 mins. Having an ice cream social and participating in the annual book swap. Please remember to send in a wrapped book, limit $5.00 labeled To: A Boy From: A Boy

or To: A Girl From: A Girl. 

If you are unable to participate, please let me know in advance.

The last 30 mins., the students wanted to watch a Christmas video.

ALSO: I welcome all the help I can get, so if you want to attend that day, that would be great. Parking is a HUGE issue, so please help and try to carpool. Thanks! J

Math- Most teachers will be post-testing for the unit this week.  The unit basically covers fractions and geometry. See previous newsletters for skills, and have the students study their notes. Some teachers will be also teaching Area of a Circle.

Spelling-No spelling words this week

 

English- NO DOL this week.

 

Math- Continuing the fraction/geometry unit.

Most teachers are now focusing on geometry.

Skills covered in this unit are:

Vocabulary: trapezoid, parallelogram, triangle, quadrilateral, congruent, area, polygon.

 

AREA: square, rectangle, triangle, and especially irregular polygons where they need to divide the shape, figure each area, and then add the areas together to get the total area. Whew!

 

Reading- Wordly Wise Unit 8 this week!!!

                Test on Thursday, Dec. 11^th.

We are going to TRY to read

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

Spelling-Check agenda for misspelled words and look for the list tonight in the word search.  Challenge words this week are:

colony, compensate, deposit, fascinate, feeble, formal, frigid, harsh, huddle, and remote.

English- NO DOL this week.

Math- Continuing the fraction/geometry unit.

Current focus is on the fractions. The hardest part of the fractions unit is +/-- mixed numbers with unlike denominators (regrouping, also)

Always reduce to simplest form.

Reading- Wordly Wise Unit 7 this week!!!

Test on Thursday of this week.

We are concluding Ghost Cadet by Friday!!!

By December 2, each of the students should be at 40% of THEIR INDIVIDUAL goal.

FALL FESTIVAL

Thanks to all who helped, especially all the students who worked for roughly two hours that night. You are very dedicated!!! J Many people commented on the success of    “The Haunted House.”

I sincerely regret not being able to attend, but my own children had a chorus event that they’ve been working on for months.
