A very special thanks to our Room Mom, Barbara Brumback and Art/cooking Mom, Beth Pound for their help throughout the year.  Mr. and Mrs. Heckstall did an  awesome job as AR parents.  All of our parent volunteers played a vital role in making this a successful year.  Also, thanks to those who could not volunteer time but sent in many donations throughout the year.

Curriculum News

Students exhibited much growth on their final Star test and Individualized Reading Inventory. Word recognition, comprehension, and fluency scores increased a lot! It is very rewarding to all of us!  Thanks for helping your child practice the phonics patterns for their retest.  Many scored 100%.

In Math, we began time tests with mixed addition and subtraction problems.  First, we practiced with ten minutes then moved to five minutes.  This is an area for many to work on this summer.

Thanks for your support with the Bonzer Australian Animal projects.  In Australia, bonzer means terrific!  Our class enjoyed learning lots of interesting information about many unusual animals.  For some summer Australian fun, you may want to visit the Kangaroo Conservation Center in Dawsonville, GA. They have over 250 kangaroos!  Check it out at www.kangarrocenter.com or phone # 770- 265-6100.

The Cobb County Fire Department presented an excellent four day program.  They taught the students lots of information including potential life saving techniques.  Hopefully, your child shared what they learned about fire safety.

Curriculum News

Reading

Next Wednesday your child will take the IRI again.  This is an Individualized Reading Inventory.  During the Jan. conference, I shared the results of the August IRI.  The IRI consists of oral reading, comprehension, and phonics tests.  Some students will retest on the Dolch sight words too.  On Monday, I will send home the August phonics test. Since we have covered all the patterns, I hope to see a lot of growth.  Please help them prepare for this retest by practicing the words they missed in Aug.  Remember many of the words are nonsense so we get a true picture of your child's ability to decode words.  Fluency will be retested too.

Science

Our final unit is Life Cycles of plants and animals.  To introduce this unit, Mr. Beck will speak to the Second Grade about fungi.  Additionally, students will learn about the life cycles of plants in general as well as mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, and amphibians.  Another special program is planned for May 15.  Students will learn about photosynthesis. This challenging concept will be taught using a "hands on approach".  Finally, we hope to receive caterpillars soon so students will get to observe first hand the life cycle of a butterfly.  They will complete an observation log to go along with the butterfly's life cycle.

Social Studies/Science

To integrate these two subjects the students chose an Australian animal to research.  In the Thursday folder sent home on April 24, you received a copy of some excellent free websites (actually they are paid by CCSD) that are safe and grade appropriate.   You also received a note explaining the guidelines for the project.  The grading rubric was on one side.  Finally, the pre-writing notes were in the same folder.  Students began their research using the Australian Animal notes in their last technology class but they need to complete them at home.  This worksheet is an outline of information they need to include in their project.  The final project can be a report, song, poem, etc. as long as all information about their animal is included.  A model or drawing of the animal is part of the project too.  Please remind  your child not to copy any information from books or websites.  When they bring their project to school, they will give an oral presentation.  In other words, they will teach the class about their animal.  They should not just read their report.  Also, they need to be able to answer questions from me or the class.  I will not ask anything that was not included in the guidelines.  Thanks for your support with this project.  The class seems very excited about it.  I hope they enjoy learning about their animal and teaching us interesting facts.  If you have any questions, please contact me.

Curriculum News

Reading/Language Arts

We continue to work on the following skills, concepts, and strategies:

Identifying the main idea in a paragraph or story

writing a main idea in a story as well as details and an ending

Using commas and quotation marks correctly

writing in complete sentences with correct punctuation and capitalization

identifying subject and predicate in a sentence

writing a letter in correct format

identifying facts and opinions

writing a persuasive story stating an opinion with supporting reasons for the opinion

ending a persuasive story by restating your opinion with most important reason

Math

Currently we are working on three digit addition and subtraction with regrouping.  We completed multiplication last week but we will review it for the CRCT.  Practicing multiplication at home will be helpful too. They learned several strategies to solve multiplication problems such as repeated addition, drawing groups or an array and using a multiplication table.

Science/Social Studies

Our study of the solar system has been one of high interest.  Thanks to Ethan Pound for sharing his superb model of the solar system, which he made for the Science Fair.  The students have enjoyed learning many new facts!  Next week, we will go back to Social Studies and learn all about Australia.  Your child will choose an Australian animal to research and identify the life cycle.  You will receive more information about this project later.

Everyone who pledged money for our Boosterthon Fun  Run.  We are very close to meeting our goal.  Tomorrow is the last day to pledge so hopefully we will make it. In fact, if we make our goal, the class will earn two free visits from Molly. The Fancellas Fireballs ran and walked their hearts out on March 12.

Mr. Heckstall is helping Mrs. Heckstall as an AR parent and we look forward to having him come in on Fridays to update our class!

Reminders

Please check to see if your child needs new school supplies.  Many students are telling me they don't have pencils, pens, crayons, etc.  It is very important to be prepared each day with all of these supplies.  We use them everyday.

Agendas should be cleaned out daily.  Please have your child give you any PTA notes or graded worksheets for the day.

As listed on the homework chart and in agendas, students need to read AR books nightly. Please use the comprehension questions that I passed out at conference time to better prepare them.  Each student needs to take a minimum of two AR tests per week.

Keep practicing subtraction math facts!

Have your child take practice CRCT tests on line.

Six Flags Six Hour Reading Club

The following students earned a free ticket to Six Flags for completing the required amount of reading:

Nichole Beck, Katherine Cuellar, Miranda Donehoo, Jordan Rivers, and Katelyn Sorg

Congratulations to all of you!

Molly Day

If you did not hear the exciting news, I am very surprised.  The class met Molly on March 4.  Molly was well behaved and your children were fabulous!  Therefore, Molly will come again as points are earned.  Currently, my class is having a difficult time behaving in the lunchroom thus earning points for another Molly visit.  They are talking too loudly and in some cases screaming.  Also, they are getting out of their seats to go back to get napkins, forks, etc.  They are suppose to get everything they need before they sit down and they are not allowed to leave their seat without the monitor's permission.  Please go over these rules with your child. I appreciate your support.

Our menu included the following delicious items:  Jasmine rice, Teriyaki beef and chicken wings, Soben noodles, California Rolls, Samurai Mix with wasabi peas, Spring Rolls, Candy Sushi, sweet bread, rock candy, and green tea

Science Fair

First I would like to commend Trygve Miller for his entry in the Science Fair. By mistake, I omitted his name on the last blog.

Additionally we had a winner from our class.  Nichole Beck placed second at the school level and first place representing the Tom Mathis Council which includes seven schools.  Wow and Congratulations to Nichole!

CRCT News

Mark your calendars for April 23-25 and April 28-29.  These are the testing dates for Second Grade. Please schedule all appointments on a different date.  Any make-up tests are done by another teacher in a different setting.  Of course, research shows that students test best with their own teacher in their classroom environment. Thanks for your support regarding this matter. Also, you received a letter last week with your child's student ID# to go online and take practice tests.  I hope you will help your child take advantage of this opportunity to receive additional practice while using the CRCT testing format.

Conference Week

I enjoyed meeting with each of you.  Thanks again for all your support. We need to work together (teacher, parent, and child) to ensure success. It was rewarding for me to share your child's progress.  With extra practice, weak areas will improve!  Please remember to encourage your child to read daily to improve both fluency and comprehension.  Hopefully, I will see an explosion of reading in AR as well as taking tests.  As I explained at conferences, everyone has ample time to take tests every day!

Curriculum News

Social Studies

Our Japan unit began this week and will culminate on February 22 with our Food Celebration.  This is a very high interest unit for second graders.  The main focus is comparing life in Japan to USA.  Some of the areas we will discuss are the Japanese tea ceremony, clothing, food, schools, ikebana, location, land forms  of the country and much more. Although comparing Japan to USA is a Georgia Performance Standard in Social Studies, students will read fiction and non-fiction books about Japan and write about Japan in friendly letter form to their book buddies.

If you are contacted by room moms, please help out with donations for our food celebration.  A note in the Thursday folder went home today.  The students are already looking forward to it.

Math

When helping your child, please refer to the unit 3 parent letter, which I sent home at the beginning of the unit..  Many students need extra practice counting change back from $1.00 to $5.00 and other skills in this unit.  I feel sure this will be on the CRCT, too.

Keep practicing subtraction facts!

With the flu and cold season upon us, the computer Lab is in need of kleenex and hand sanitizer.  Any donations will be greatly appreciated.

Curriculum News

Math

Please keep practicing subtraction math facts.  I see some slow but steady improvement.

Unit 3 will begin on January 8.  You will receive a parent letter with unit 3 skills in the first Thursday Busy Bee folder for January.

Reading

Please encourage your child to read a balance of fiction and nonfiction books.  During this grading period, our focus has been on nonfiction reading.  I have noticed some difficulty with comprehension of nonfiction books.  Due to the advanced vocabulary, nonfiction books should be read three to four times to ensure accuracy.  Additionally, I have noticed a drop in fluency with nonfiction reading.  I will discuss this in more detail at parent conferences.

Spelling

After the holidays, I will use a new format for the weekly spelling test.  The words will be presented in sentence form. I will dictate approximately five sentences, which will be evaluated for spelling, english, and handwriting.

Hope all of you have a blessed Christmas and year to come.  Enjoy your holidays and I look forward to meeting with everyone in January.

Curriculum News

Math

Check out the following website for math practice.  It is a wonderful resource for practicing math facts to prepare for timed tests.  First, go to Mixed Operations then click on Mathflash.  Your child can use the timer and choose different ability levels.

                   http://www.cobbk12.org/~resources/math/number_operations.htm

Language Arts

In narrative writing, students learned that good writers use powerful verbs and a variety of adjectives so their writing leaves a picture in the reader's mind or a memory in their heart.  We reviewed juicy color words as good choices for adjectives. Also, students were introduced to the dictionary and thesaurus as a resource tool.

Next, we will begin informational writing to go along with non-fiction reading.  I will introduce this with the grandparent interview.  The interview is pre-writing for a story about one grandparent.  The information from the interview will be written in paragraph form.  I look forward to the student's sharing these stories.

Social Studies

After completing our unit on Plains and Eastern Woodland Native Americans, we began comparing and contrasting our community to Plymouth.

to Barbara Brumback again and Beth Pound for our special Fall art projects.  The students enjoyed painting pumpkins and decorating cookies.

Math

Many students need extra help with subtraction regrouping.  Please continue to check daily work and homework.  As I stated before, children, who do not know their addition and subtraction facts, are at a disadvantage because it takes them longer to complete their work.  I still see a lot of students using their fingers.  Please encourage them to use their hundreds chart (they should have one in their agenda) instead of fingers and of course, practice, practice, practice!

Accelerated Reader News

On the last report sent home, I noticed several students are reading books and taking tests out of their reading range.  Please check the book level before your child takes a test.  Taking a test out of the reading range generally effects their accuracy in a negative manner Thanks for your support with this matter.
