Opps - what happened to the year
Well, school is over- all the artwork is gone - I will miss everybody and keeping drawing on those rainy days!
See you next year! and we will have another student teacher!

Every student should have brought home by now a bag that contained a piece of artwork and materials from Original Artwork. This is a fundraiser that we have worked through PTSA for over 7 years now. The students know it as the magnet project as it is referred to as in the art room. All proceeds raised go into the PTSA general fund.
In other areas, fifth grade has taken home their 'piggy bank' sculptures that were on display in the media center. They are currently being introduced to the work of MC Escher and his transforming tessellations.
Fourth graders questioned some of the wonders of the world by looking at Stonehenge, the pyramids of Giza and finally the Moai heads of Easter Island. We tried our hands at subtractive sculpture (using bars of Ivory soap) and found out that its harder than it looks. We are going to be taking a deeper look into the work of Henri Matisse and his work with positive and negative shapes in his paper cutouts.
Third graders currently have on display in the school a black and white photography project that contains the subject matter of the hands of the important people of their life. The work of Faith Ringgold's Tar Beach, is allowing us to focus on the important places in our life.
Second graders were also comparing and contrasting the 2d paintings of Degas with his 3d sculptures of ballerinas. How does one capture a person in motion in a painting and also in a piece of aluminum foil.
First graders have been working with printmaking either using a variety of vegetable to stamp out faces or making our own 'invisible heart' stamps like artist Jim Dine.
Kindergartners have been painting close up pictures of their friends. I will hold onto this project so they can go on display for their May PTSA performance. Our Mardi Gras masks will dance their way home next week.
If you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to e-mail me lynn.duhn@cobbk12.org
Good News - Bad News - I have rec'd a check from First Artworks for $1100, all of which will be donated to Jump Rope for Heart in honor of Coach Wes Jones. Unfortunately, I also rec'd word that First Artworks has closed up operations due to the economy. If you have not rec'd any reproductions that you have paid for please let me know. The school was fortunate enough to also rec' 6 student reproductions that are now hanging in the front hallway.
K,1 and 2 have spent the first week back cutting out snowflakes - Ask your child how they can connect snowflakes to either math or science?
Third grade is working on a project that is close to my own artistic heart. I have just introduced to them to photography as an art form focusing in on point of view. Each child will have the opportunity to bring home a disposable black and white camera for two evenings. At that time they are to photograph the hands of someone that is important to them in their life. They will also interview that person. The students will be sharing the camera with their classmates and are learning about responsibility as well. We hope to have everything developed and on display in February. Keep an eye open.
Fourth graders have been learning about perspective. While fifth graders have been working in clay creating either banks or just pieces of sculpture. Look for those to be on display in the media center soon.
with a handshake,
Ms. Duhn
I have just received the amount raised for the First Artworks framed art show. We raised a little over $1100, all of which will be donated to Jump Rope for Heart this year. Thank you to those who purchased and to those who came to see. As of this typing I have not received the original artwork back yet - but hope to have it back soon.
We have been busy in the art room- some things have been making their way home. In kindergarten, we have created a very special clay gift, which will be wrapped in wrapping paper that we made.
First grade has been working abstractly - we watercolored some faces inspired by artist Paul Klee and then payed close attention to the work of Piet Mondrian and his fascination with the primary colors.
Second grade has been multi-tasking, glazing pottery and working with vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines recently.
Third grade traveled into Van Gogh's Starry Night, and has been really working hard at drawing what we see as realistically as possible.
Fourth grade is making connections to their science studies and using the terms opaque, transparent and translucent as it relates to stain glass windows, which will be hanging up soon in our cafeteria.
Fifth grade has just started working with clay and asking them self the question - Does art have to have a function or can it just look pretty?
Thank you to everyone who took the time to come and enjoy the art show. I truly enjoyed meeting moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas, aunts and uncle and big/little brothers and sisters. The original artwork should make its way home in December and I know you will pick out that special frame and find that special place to hang it.
As soon as I know how much was officially raised I will let you know.
Again thank you all for your support!!!
Ms. Duhn
Families and Friends,
On display, the evening of November 6th from 5-7 pm our school gym will be turned into the STILL MUSEUM OF ART. Over 700 pieces of framed art work created by our Still students can be viewed. You will be able to purchase the frame and matte and a percentage of the proceeds will be returned back to the school. All monies raised will be donated to Jump Rope for Heart,(American Heart Association) a charitable activity that was proudly sponsored by Mr. Jones in PE.
My true intention was not to have a fundraiser, I just want everyone and to come and view the priceless masterpieces created by our young artists. I know your art hearts will grow ten times bigger. Please leave your wallets at home. Do not feel pressured to buy. The original pieces will be returned to you in December at that time if you purchased a framed piece two years ago - you can swap out the images. You can go to Target and purchase a frame or find a frame at home that needs to be changed out.
Come and enjoy the masterpieces!
With a handshake,
Ms. Duhn, Ed.S.

Time has flown! Artwork is slowly making its way home. I have gathered a piece from every student for the framed art show which will be in November. We will be turning our gym into Still's Museum of Art!
K- has been painting scarecrows. Scarecrows have been the focus, which will lead us into not drawing 'stick people' because stick people drive Ms. Duhn crazy as well as break easily.
1st traveled to Monet's garden in our imaginations and actually went out to paint in our garden to check out how the sun changes the way things look.
2nd focused on warm and cool colors - A palm tree was painted on the warm background while a 'spooky' tree was painted on the cool. Did they tell you a story of when they were brave? Our brave bead on our necklaces reminded of us of time we had to have courage.
3rd has left the big city surrounded by skyscrapers and has looked at the abstract portraits of Pablo Picasso.
4th is doing exercises in value - using lights and darks to make forms drawn on our 2-dimensional paper look 3-dimensional.
5th is in the process of looking at the symbols and patterns created in Mandalas and combing it with a sun that has character.
The summer has flown by and we are back at school! It is great to see so many new friends along with the old. Our art room is no longer brand new but has gained some personality over the summer. We are spending the first two weeks re-acquainting ourselves and drawing our self- portraits. Some of my new K friends are coming home and talking about drawing on the board. For each class,I have been introducing lessons with the Interactive Promethean Board and everybody wants to try moving, erasing and drawing on it.
Exciting news: The framed art show we did 2 years ago will be back. It is an event in which every child will have a piece of artwork framed and on display the evening of November 6th. Your child's pride will grow ten times bigger when they see their work framed and on display gallery style. You will have the opportunity to purchase the framed piece with any proceeds raised going toward creating a school wide mural in the hallway across from the computer lab. We will start our masterpieces soon!
I invite you to stop by the art room any time you are in the building!
