Summer Studies
Children typically regress academically by about two months during the summer. Therefore, it is important to keep children involved in some sort of academics throughout the summer. 20 to 30 minutes each day of academics can help your child retain all of his or her gains that were made in fourth grade. I will give several options to choose from for summer studies.
All Students:
□ Will have a test on United States Government on the first day of fifth grade (based on the US Government study guide located on the blog)
□ Will be given a test on times tables 0-12 in 7 minutes on the first day of fifth grade
Optional Assignments (choose one):
□ A math calendar with daily assignments
□ Three book reports based on chapter books that are at least 100 pages long
□ Three written research papers on any significant event or person from American History (1700-1860). These should be three to five paragraphs in length, include a list of sources, and clearly be the product of the student (they should know the pronunciation and definition of every word in the report)
□ A combination of research reports and book (3 total).
□ A summer bridge book or packet
□ Custom Assignments
□ Some students will have custom assignments depending on what skills or abilities need to be developed most. I have already spoken to the parents of students that will receive customized assignments.
□ Any summer academics such as tutoring or anything arranged by parents (send a note on the first day as proof)
Students who return completed work will be rewarded with one week of free ice cream on the second week of school.
