This week we have focused on identifying whether a selection is fiction or nonfiction. We are identifying every selection we read as fiction or nonfiction, then identifying the main idea and details. We have begun practicing for the CRCT which the students will take toward the end of April.
In Math we worked on measuring and comparing length, and weight. Next week we will measure and compare capacity with non-standard units of measure. We will also begin our unit on adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers without regrouping.
In Science we have learned about the needs of animals. Next week we will focus on animals’ appearance, growth, and movement.
In writing this week we focused on using pronouns and subject / verb agreement in our sentences. We have been working on writing informational pieces on animals (how they meet their need for shelter, and how we meet our pets’ needs when we take care of them).

Congratulations to Eden Norris!!!
She is the Still Elementary first grade writing fair winner!
Now her piece about a time when she had courage will go on to the county level for judging! Good job Eden!!

This week we have focused on finding the main idea and details of an informational text. Finding the main idea has been a little difficult for us. We will continue to focus on this whenever we read a passage or story. We have begun practicing for the CRCT which the students will take toward the end of April.
In Math we completed our unit on telling time to the hour and half hour. Next week we will work on organizing data in tally tables, and graphs (bar and picture) and using those to analyze data. We took our 3rd 9 week IMI (Individual Math Inventory) over all of the performance standards we have learned this 9 weeks. Next week we will be working on measuring and comparing length, weight, and capacity with non-standard units of measure.
In Science we have had a great time being “scientists” and observing our bean plants. It has been very exciting to see the roots, stems, and leaves appear from our seeds. We will be sending the plants home today. Next week we will begin learning about the needs of animals. (We have learned plant needs, so now we can learn what animals need.)
In writing next week we will continue focusing on subject / verb agreement in our sentences. We will be working on writing informational pieces on animals (characteristics, needs, and comparisons between them).
Thank you to...
Ashley Beck’s parents for extra copy paper.

This week we completed our official phonics program. We will keep reviewing all of our skills, and will continue with phonics practice lists for the rest of the year. During our phonics time, however, we will be changing our focus to looking at parts of speech in our books (nouns, verbs, and pronouns). We will be looking at synonyms and antonyms, and words with multiple meanings. Next week we will begin practicing for the CRCT which the students will take toward the end of April.
In Math we have been learning to tell time to the hour and half hour. Next week we will be working on organizing data in tally tables, and graphs (bar and picture) and using those to analyze data.
In Science we are learning about the parts of the plant, and about what plants need. This week we planted seeds, and we will be watching them grow. We want to find out what grows first, next , etc. We are using our science skill of observation to learn how plants grow.
In writing next week we will continue focusing on using pronouns correctly in our sentences. We will be working on subject / verb agreement in our sentences. We are still working on writing informational pieces.
Thank you to...
