Moving Along!

It is hard to believe that we have passed the 100th day of school.  We are continuing to work very hard in E.I.P.  The children should be bringing home a small book each week.  This book is targeted to their reading level.  Please have your child read this book several times at home.  If your child comes to word they don't know make a list of those words and work on them.  You can also change the beginning sound of those words and make words in the same word family to practice reading.  Talk about the characters of the book, where the story is taking place, and have your child tell you the events that happened in the story.

If there is anything more specific that I can help you or your child with please don't hesitate to send me a note through your child's teacher.

Happy Reading!  Mrs. Peck

Happy Thanksgiving

It is hard to believe that we are coming upon the holiday season.  Continue to read each day with your child.  As you read please explain and talk about things that your child might not understand in a book.  We need to help build your child's vocabulary with any chance we get.  Usually your child's teacher's blog will tell you items in each subject that the class will be learning in the next weeks.  Read over these and then tell your child everything that you know about the subject.  Use this as a learning time to go onto the internet and find information out about the subject.  This will help your child know some of the vocabulary already before it is introduced and will help your child feel very successful when these subjects are introduced in the classroom.

Have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Moving Along!

The children are doing a great job in my small groups.  In kindergarten we are continuing to work on identifying the alphabet and the sounds that the letters make.  Please continue to play games with the letters and work each day identifying the letters and please read to your child each night.  In first grade we are working hard to learn the sight words each day.  We are calling these words, "popper words", when the word "pops" into your head without thinking then you have the word!  Continue to play games with these words.  Please read a book with and to your child each day.  In second grade we are reading and working on, "breaking the code," with phonics.  Each day we are reviewing phonic rules to reinforce how to break down a word if you don't know it.  Please read the little books each day to and with your child!

Happy Reading!  Mrs. Peck

We Are Going Strong In E.I.P.!

The students are working very hard in my classroom each day!  When your child brings home a small book from my classroom please have them read it to you several times.  Here are a few ideas to help you and your child with the little books:

First ask your child to go through the book and just tell you about the pictures on each page.  Help your child to notice small details and talk about these items.  For instance if you have a picture with a tree and the leaves are all gone- talk about what season it must be and how you figured that out even without any words.  Talk about how people look: sad, mad, happy, etc. How do you know that?  You can help your child learn new vocabulary by doing this activity.  Next ask your child to read you the title and then the book.  If your child has a problem with a particular word- ask them how they might figure it out.  1-Look at the picture 2- Read on and see what might make since 3- Sound out the word by using the sounds you know and then combining them with the pictures and what makes since. 4- Look for any parts of the word that you know and chunk the word 5- Finally just ask if you cannot figure the word out.

When your child is finished reading the book to you, you read the book back to them.  Make sure that you are using good inflection and making a point to pause at commas and at periods to help your child hear a good readers flow of reading. Please read to your child each day for pleasure.  You might start a family book that you read a part of each night at dinner and then another family member reads the next night.

Hopefully these ideas will help you with the little books that we send home each week.  Please remember to send the book back the very next day as we usually use it in class as well.

Happy Reading!

E.I.P. WITH ME! MRS. PECK

WELCOME TO E.I.P.!

E.I.P. stands for Early Intervention Program, this is a State Funded Program to help children at the elementary level.  My name is Mrs. Peck and I am one of the E.I.P. teachers here at Still.  This year I am working with children in kindergarten, first and second grades.  I have taught kindergarten and first grade over the past 21 years.  I have been an E.I.P. teacher for the past 10 years.  If I am working with your child this year I am pulling them out from their classroom into a  small group setting of 3 - 6 children.  We will be working on skills in reading, writing, and phonics.  We will be targeting skills that the children need a little extra practice on.  In my small groups we will read books on the appropriate levels of reading, we will play games and use other strategies to hopefully encourage your child to be a fantastic reader!  My goal is to get each child on level with reading and at the same time help the children develop a love for reading and learning.

Please let me know if there is anything that I can help you with this year.  I will put different activities on my blog from time to time that you could do with your child.  Each and every day it is very important to read, read, read!

I look forward to working with your children this year!
