The students are working very hard in my classroom each day! When your child brings home a small book from my classroom please have them read it to you several times. Here are a few ideas to help you and your child with the little books:
First ask your child to go through the book and just tell you about the pictures on each page. Help your child to notice small details and talk about these items. For instance if you have a picture with a tree and the leaves are all gone- talk about what season it must be and how you figured that out even without any words. Talk about how people look: sad, mad, happy, etc. How do you know that? You can help your child learn new vocabulary by doing this activity. Next ask your child to read you the title and then the book. If your child has a problem with a particular word- ask them how they might figure it out. 1-Look at the picture 2- Read on and see what might make since 3- Sound out the word by using the sounds you know and then combining them with the pictures and what makes since. 4- Look for any parts of the word that you know and chunk the word 5- Finally just ask if you cannot figure the word out.
When your child is finished reading the book to you, you read the book back to them. Make sure that you are using good inflection and making a point to pause at commas and at periods to help your child hear a good readers flow of reading. Please read to your child each day for pleasure. You might start a family book that you read a part of each night at dinner and then another family member reads the next night.
Hopefully these ideas will help you with the little books that we send home each week. Please remember to send the book back the very next day as we usually use it in class as well.
Happy Reading!
