Spring Is Just Around The Corner!

In kindergarten EIP, we are working on letter sounds, the kindergarten sight words, rhyming words and writing words.  I like to tell the children that they are writing ,"the Kid Way,"  I tell them if they say the word then they can write the word.  I encourage the children to write the sounds that they hear.  I tell them that sometimes they will have to read the words to me because unfortunately I am not a kid anymore and sometimes I can't read the kid way.  I tell them that it is ok if they don't write the word just perfect that they are learning and right now the kid way is great and little by little they will learn the correct way to spell words.  Work with your kindergarten child at home and help them to write letters, lists and stories and remember it's okay to write the, "Kid Way!"

Math 5th Grade Must Haves!

In 5th grade math we are really moving along.  Please, please, please work with your children each day to learn and know their multiplication problems as well as doubles in addition.  These skills are a must to have as we move forward in math.  With the CRCT just around the corner in April we need to have these pre math skills down pat!  Make it a part of your routine daily- on the way to school, while you cook supper, anytime but make it a tradition.

Reading- please also set aside a special time each day to read to and with your child.  These pass away so very quickly, make reading a special and fun time.  Not only will you make your child a better reader but you will also make some very loving memories!

Holidays Are Here!

As the holidays  approach remember to set aside special reading times with you and your child.  Make wonderful holiday memories reading classics to your child. I'm sure that we all can remember special holiday books from your childhood, and what special memories for your child to have as well.

In math remember that practice is the key.  If your child is having a hard time with a concept they are encouraged to come into our math room to work with myself or Mrs. Craft as we are in the room at 7:15 each morning.

Happy Holidays to you and your family!  Mrs. Peck

Back To The Basics!

We are in full swing with our EIP classes.  We welcome, Mrs. Craft, to the EIP department.  Mrs. Craft was an EIP teacher at Ford Elementary before moving to Still.  Mrs. Craft and I are job sharing our EIP job.  This year we are working with 5th grade math and reading, 4th grade reading, 1st grade math and Kindergarten.  We have gotten off to a great start!

5th Grade Math News- We are working with decimal numbers and we are multiplying and adding these numbers.  Here is a little rhyme that might help your child remember the rules of decimals:

                                                      The Job of a Decimal

When adding or subtracting you must line me up-

When you multiply, throw me in the sky, add me

back up and put me back in- Do it every time and

                              you will win, win, win!

Please have the 5th graders practice their multiplication facts everyday!

Moving Along!

It is hard to believe that we have passed the 100th day of school.  We are continuing to work very hard in E.I.P.  The children should be bringing home a small book each week.  This book is targeted to their reading level.  Please have your child read this book several times at home.  If your child comes to word they don't know make a list of those words and work on them.  You can also change the beginning sound of those words and make words in the same word family to practice reading.  Talk about the characters of the book, where the story is taking place, and have your child tell you the events that happened in the story.

If there is anything more specific that I can help you or your child with please don't hesitate to send me a note through your child's teacher.

Happy Reading!  Mrs. Peck

Happy Thanksgiving

It is hard to believe that we are coming upon the holiday season.  Continue to read each day with your child.  As you read please explain and talk about things that your child might not understand in a book.  We need to help build your child's vocabulary with any chance we get.  Usually your child's teacher's blog will tell you items in each subject that the class will be learning in the next weeks.  Read over these and then tell your child everything that you know about the subject.  Use this as a learning time to go onto the internet and find information out about the subject.  This will help your child know some of the vocabulary already before it is introduced and will help your child feel very successful when these subjects are introduced in the classroom.

Have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Moving Along!

The children are doing a great job in my small groups.  In kindergarten we are continuing to work on identifying the alphabet and the sounds that the letters make.  Please continue to play games with the letters and work each day identifying the letters and please read to your child each night.  In first grade we are working hard to learn the sight words each day.  We are calling these words, "popper words", when the word "pops" into your head without thinking then you have the word!  Continue to play games with these words.  Please read a book with and to your child each day.  In second grade we are reading and working on, "breaking the code," with phonics.  Each day we are reviewing phonic rules to reinforce how to break down a word if you don't know it.  Please read the little books each day to and with your child!

Happy Reading!  Mrs. Peck

We Are Going Strong In E.I.P.!

The students are working very hard in my classroom each day!  When your child brings home a small book from my classroom please have them read it to you several times.  Here are a few ideas to help you and your child with the little books:

First ask your child to go through the book and just tell you about the pictures on each page.  Help your child to notice small details and talk about these items.  For instance if you have a picture with a tree and the leaves are all gone- talk about what season it must be and how you figured that out even without any words.  Talk about how people look: sad, mad, happy, etc. How do you know that?  You can help your child learn new vocabulary by doing this activity.  Next ask your child to read you the title and then the book.  If your child has a problem with a particular word- ask them how they might figure it out.  1-Look at the picture 2- Read on and see what might make since 3- Sound out the word by using the sounds you know and then combining them with the pictures and what makes since. 4- Look for any parts of the word that you know and chunk the word 5- Finally just ask if you cannot figure the word out.

When your child is finished reading the book to you, you read the book back to them.  Make sure that you are using good inflection and making a point to pause at commas and at periods to help your child hear a good readers flow of reading. Please read to your child each day for pleasure.  You might start a family book that you read a part of each night at dinner and then another family member reads the next night.

Hopefully these ideas will help you with the little books that we send home each week.  Please remember to send the book back the very next day as we usually use it in class as well.

Happy Reading!

E.I.P. WITH ME! MRS. PECK

WELCOME TO E.I.P.!

E.I.P. stands for Early Intervention Program, this is a State Funded Program to help children at the elementary level.  My name is Mrs. Peck and I am one of the E.I.P. teachers here at Still.  This year I am working with children in kindergarten, first and second grades.  I have taught kindergarten and first grade over the past 21 years.  I have been an E.I.P. teacher for the past 10 years.  If I am working with your child this year I am pulling them out from their classroom into a  small group setting of 3 - 6 children.  We will be working on skills in reading, writing, and phonics.  We will be targeting skills that the children need a little extra practice on.  In my small groups we will read books on the appropriate levels of reading, we will play games and use other strategies to hopefully encourage your child to be a fantastic reader!  My goal is to get each child on level with reading and at the same time help the children develop a love for reading and learning.

Please let me know if there is anything that I can help you with this year.  I will put different activities on my blog from time to time that you could do with your child.  Each and every day it is very important to read, read, read!

I look forward to working with your children this year!
