This Week!

What a busy week!  The children had a wonderful time running laps on Wednesday morning and I really appreciate your support of Boosterthon.  As a class, we raised $125.00 per lap.  The children are bringing home their Boosterthon envelopes today and the donations should be returned by next Friday, March 21.  Thank you so much!

Supplies!

Please remember to send your child with at least two sharpened pencils every day along with a snack.  Also, if you could send in a container of clorox wipes or hand sanitizer for Mrs. Missini, it would be greatly appreciated.

School Pictures!

The children had their school pictures taken yesterday and this year it is a little different.  Every child will receive pictures and it is up to you if you want to purchase them or not.  We also took a class picture yesterday.

I will put additional tests on the site next week.  We are also practicing the CRCT tests in class several times a week.  Please know that the children are required to read the passages by themselves and I am permitted to read the questions to them.

We have worked all week on our presidents reports and I am looking forward to reading them over the weekend.  On Monday, the children and I will have conferences about the report and discuss the rubric individually.  Thanks for your help with this.  Next week, we will research a Famous American and type the report!

Character Kid!

Congratulations to Jacob Baker!  He is our Character Kid for this week.  Jacob is a good helper to all of the children in the class and tries his best every day!

Fluency!

The children continue to work on reading fluently.  We discussed several strategies that you might use at home.  They are:

1.  The child can read the story aloud by him or herself.

2.  The parent can read one page and the child reads the other page aloud.

3.  The parent and child read the story aloud together.

There are some books that the children should read silently, like AR books, but the goal of the weekly story is to increase reading fluency.  So far, we are also working on main idea and supporting details, sequence in a story and comparing two different stories.  Thanks for your help and support.

Japanese Sites

Miss Kitty has recommended several sites to visit during our study of Japan.

Accelerated Reader Update

The children are working hard on the Accelerated Reading Program.  Please make sure that they are reading the book with you at night.  Feel free to ask them questions about what happened in the story.  When the children check out a book from the Media Center, I try to make sure that the book is in the right reading range.  We are entering the fourth month of school, so the children should be reading a 2.4 or higher.  Thanks for your support of this program.

Donations

If you have a chance, could you please send in some hand sanitizer, liquid hand soap or some chlorox wipes.  I clean the desks every Friday and now that the weather is getting colder, I am trying to keep the children healthy.  I appreciate your help with this.

Science and Social Studies

After Halloween, we will begin our Science Unit on Types of Energy.  I will enclose the Science newsletter in the Thursday folder.   Also, our Social Studies unit for this nine weeks is a study of Pilgrims and Native Americans.  The children really enjoy this in second grade.
