3rd Grade - Ms. Strudthoff

Strudthoff's School News January 27, 2012

In the classroom...

Language-  The students will finish reading an informational text titled Mammals.  We will compare and contrast mammals to reptiles.  We are beginning to review and practice for the CRCT.  This will be done in small group and large group.

Math-  We will practice subtracting decimals and begin to measure to the nearest 1/2 and 1/4 inch. Continue to practice multiplication facts. 

Social Studies-  Eleanor Roosevelt

Cursive Handwriting-  We are beginning to write spelling words in cursive.  The students have learned to write all lowercase letters.

**Valentine's Day-  We will exchange cards on 2/14.  A class roster will be sent home next week.

In the classroom...

Language Arts-  We will work on comparing and contrasting using the text It's A Mammal.  The students will also identify pronouns and write informational paragraphs about FDR.

Handwriting-  We have finished all of the lowercase cursive letters.  Next week we will start writing spelling words in cursive.

Math-  Word problems using fractions, how fractions and decimals are related, and adding decimals.

Social Studies  Franklin Roosevelt and the students will locate major rivers of the U.S.

OUR CLASS STORE/ STRUDTHOFF's SUPER MART is next Friday. (Jan. 27th)

Thank you for all of the donations.  We are going to have fun spending our well earned money. You can still send in donations. (pencils, stickers, gently used stuffed animals, toys, books, etc.)

Happy  New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome Back! The students came back motivated to work.  I think they actually missed school.  We are so excited about everyone's progress and eager to begin the new year.

In the classroom...

Math-  addition and subtraction of fractions

              **remember to study facts!  We have tests on Fridays.

Language-  All reading groups are working on main idea and finding details.  Our reading selections are non fiction.   

Writing- Our genre is informational writing.  The students will write an animal report. This report will be completed in computer lab and the classroom.

Social Studies- Franklin Roosevelt

ASP  REMINDER-  The ASP year end statements are available in the front office.

 

STRUDTHOFF SUPER MART-  Jan. 28th

The students have earned money and are ready to spend.  If you would like to send in items in, we would greatly appreciate your donations!  The more sent in, the more we will have in our "store".  We could use stickers, books, pens, fancy pencils, fast food prizes, gently loved toys, dollar store items, etc.

Dear  Parents,

Today the students will bring an informational sheet attached to Fri. behavior sheet.  This information will provide you with the updated STAR score, reading range, pts. and where your student is with mastering multiplication facts. 

Reminders:

Dec. 19th/Monday--- We will have a Polar Express celebration with book buddies.  We will read

                                                the book, drink hot chocolate, and complete an art project.  The students 

                                                     may   bring a robe and slippers.  This is optional.

In the classroom...

math-  We have a lot of students passing multiplication tests.  We give them on Wed. and Fri.  Continue to practice daily.

language-  Students will finish reading Lucky Charms and Birthday Wishes.  We will write a response to literature using this selection. 

science-  We will have a soil vocab. quiz on Wed.  See the attached words for practice.

social studies-  Susan B. Anthony

In the classroom...

The excitement is building for our next holiday break.  We are trying to keep a normal routine. Remember to sign agendas and read nightly.

Language Arts-  We will finish reading Lucky Charms and Birthday Wishes.  We will write haiku and character descriptions.

Math- multiplication/division

Science-  Soils and Weathering (Vocab. for this unit will be sent home Monday)

Thank you for your support this year.  We are thankful for your students and enjoy working with them.  Have a restful Thanksgiving week.

Language Arts-  The class will begin to read the chapter book Lucky Charms and Birthday Wishes. With this book we will review main idea and character comparisons. 

Math-  We are working on geometry and mastering multiplication facts 0-9.  Please keep studying facts nightly.  These are some geometry words you can review with your student.  We have covered these terms and will add more after Thanksgiving. (line, line segment, ray, angle, right angle, acute angle, obtuse angle, radius, diameter and center)

Science-  We will begin to study different types of soil.

WOW!!!!  AR! We are close to 500 pts.  Keep reading!  Take at least 2-3 tests a week. (unless you are a chapter book reader)

We loved meeting the Veteran's today.  Thank you for sharing these important people with us.  The class has worked very hard this week on multiplication facts.  Continue to practice these nightly.  Our story cube reports are due Monday.  We cannot wait to share these.  Have your student practice sharing the report at home.  Remind them it is important to speak clearly when speaking to a group. 

In the classroom...

language arts- This week we will work on locating the main idea in short passages and stories.

**spelling-  Students will not have a spelling list this week.  We will have a Thanksgiving spelling bee on Friday.  I will send home some suggested words on Monday to practice.

**writing- We will begin to learn about the genre of response to literature.

math- geometry/practice multiplication facts

social studies- We will start our study of Frederick Douglass.

In the classroom...

Math-  Remember to practice multiplication facts each night.  We have a test every  Friday.  Please let us know if you have questions.  Your student should know each week which facts to study. 

Language Arts-  We are working on recognizing non fiction text features.  The class will continue to work on spelling plurals and identifying prefixes.

Social Studies-  Maps- locating mountain ranges and a look at Paul Revere's life and how he became an American Heroe.

Writing-  Our next genre will be response to literature.  This week we will introduce the genre and model how to write a response to literature. 

ATTENTION!  WE will begin to use checkbooks in our class.  The students will have a pay day each Friday and be responsible for paying rent.  There will be opportunities for students to earn money.  During the year we will have class stores and a Market Day for the students to spend their earned money.  This will help teach economics, supply and demand, and responsibility.

Math-  multiplication/ study 3's

Language Arts-  We will read a biography of Paul Revere.  With this selection we will concentrate on non fiction features. (table of contents, glossary, charts and graphs)

Social Studies-  We will review map skills and practice locating the Appalachain Mtns. and the Rocky Mtns.

Health-  Negative effects of using drugs.

Oct. 31st-  Pumpkin Day- We will make pumpkin muffins!  In math we will estimate the weight, number of seeds, and circumference of our class pumpkin.
