Third World Entrepreneurs

Second and Third graders have been working on a unit on money.  The students will be writing books about entrepreneurship that show how much they have learned about some of the terms involved and about how businesses and the economy work.  Information regarding this should have come home with the students this week for parents to sign and return.  I recently found out about a website that I have shared with the students.  It allows people to loan money to entrepreneurs all over the world who are trying to improve their lives.  A link to the website is shown below.  I thought that some of you might be interested in what was, to me, a new way to help others help themselves. There is a great deal of information about how the program works, the risks involved, and the benefits of the program.  There is certainly no obligation for you or your student.

Anurans (Frog) Lab 3/17/09 and 3/19/09

Target classes will be having an in school field trip on March 17th and March 19th.  This program is sponsered by the Cobb County Water System as part of the environmental education department.  The students wil rotate through 5 hands on stations that explore anuran anatomy, differences between frogs and toads, metamorphosis, calls and anurans as bioindicators.  There will be live specimens too.  Due to the sensitive nature of the frogs to cold temperatures, the frogs can only be brought to the school twice that week.  All 4th grade Target students will come to class on Tuesday, 3/17/09, and all 5th grade students will have class on Thursday, 3/19/09.  This program is free of charge to the students.

Attention Parents of 5th Graders

There will be a meeting for parents of rising 6th grade Target students at Lovinggood Middle School on Thursday, March 26th at 6:30 p.m. in the theater.  This will also include information about Special Ed, GPS Math, and scheduling.  We hope that many of you can attend.

We hope that everyone had a wonderful winter break. 

We look forward to seeing all our students this week.  There will be a parent meeting on Wedneasday, January 21, at 7 a.m.  We will be finished no later than 8:00 since the students will be arriving.  It will be in Mrs. Cone's room.  Mrs. Cone is in room 213 which is the old music room.  This meeting is primarily for parents of new students, but others are certainly welcome.

Math Workshop for Parents

The math workshop mentioned below will be repeated at Lovinggood Middle School on Monday, December 8th, at 6:30 p.m.

Math Night with GAGC

GAGC will sponsor a panel discussion of the Georgia math curricula and options for advanced/gifted students.  It will be held on Monday, November 17th at 6:30 p.m. at Dodgen Middle School, which is located at 1725 Bill Murdock Road, Marietta, 30062.  We hope you can take advantage of this opportunity.

Mystery Presentations

Presentations will be Nov. 18th for 3rd grade and Nov. 20th for 2nd grade.  We will finish up and practice Nov. 11th (3rd) and Nov. 13th (2nd).  By next week (the 11th or the 13th) your child will need to:

• finish creating (or at least make a lot of progress on) the power point.  Not all information needs to be on the slides.  There can be "bullet points".  The child will add to this as he/she presents his/her show.
• practice his/her TV interview
• finish writing (or at least make a lot of progress on) the article for the newsletter.  I will help those doing the newsletter put all their articles into a Publisher newsletter next week.  They are typing in Word, and I plan to use cut-and-paste to help them put it all in one.  FOr their presentation, each will be reading his/her article to the class.

Students have been working hard.  We are looking forward to the final products.

Research Projects

2nd and 3rd graders have been working hard on their notes.  If your student brought home notes, you might want to help him/her look them over and discuss their organization.  2nd grade already has a sheet that helps with this.  The focus is for the student to explain the mystery, and then present 2 or more theories about the explanation, with evidence for or against each.  Next week we will finish up research, and do a planner for the presentation.  For details about the choices, refer to the research information that was sent home to be signed last week.  A rubric for the scoring of each was attached.  If your child does not finish research and the planner next week, it will need to be completed at home by the following week.  The students are really excited, and I am looking forward to their presentations.

Cobb GAGC Workshop

There will be a workshop on Monday, October 13th at noon at Dowell Elementary School.  The title is "Survival Skills for Parents: Navigating the Maze of Parenting a Gifted Child".  You may bring a lunch if you like.  It is presented by Linda Dudley, a school counselor.
