Smileyface MRS. RADEMACHER'S  FOURTH GRADE

May 12, 2008

SPECIALS: Mon. PE, Tues. Music, Wed. Tech, Thurs. PE, Fri. Art

We will finish ALL ABOUT SAM this week. We have had one test on it and will have two more. There was actually one today, another open book test over chapters 5 – 8. There will be a final Wordly Wise test over Lesson 10 on Friday. These will be the last reading grades for the last grading period.

Math is winding up with some pre-algebra in all classes. My class and Miss Adams class will have two more grades at least.

In science we will be dissecting owl pellets this week and doing an in class project for one more science grade. Miss Adams will be finalizing the American Revolution and will probably assign a test too.

I am so excited about being with our class another year. There have been so many gains with our group. I have already started planning, so it will be super. I will be teaming with Mr. Wilfong. He is going to teach science and I am going to teach social studies. We have worked together in the past and have a lot of fun. It is going to be FABULOUS!

Our end of year party will be on Friday, May 23 at 12:00. We are having an ice cream extravaganza on the front lawn. Feel free to come join us.

Field Day is Friday, May 16. We would like to have you at that event too. Please make sure your child has a water bottle with his or her name on it. I believe that we will start around 8:15 or so. I will send you a notice on Thursday with the latest details.

************Please send in a self addressed stamped envelope for me to mail you the final report card. I think that stamps are going up to $.42 but to be honest I don’t know what day that is supposed to occur.  If you want to pick up the report card from school that is absolutely fine. You will have to pick up the card if any money is owed to the school.

SPECIALS: Mon. Music, Tues. Tech, Wed. PE, Thurs. Art, Fri. PE

We have started a very funny book called ALL ABOUT SAM.  We will finish it pretty quickly and then begin a final book for the last two weeks. I can’t believe how much we have read this year. We reached 100% of our AR goal. I am so proud of our class. We get to have a pizza/ice cream party next Friday afternoon. We can’t wait. They have all worked so hard to get us all the points we needed.

We will continue with some algebra and some graphing for the last few weeks in my class. You may see some other things going on if your child has someone else.

We have started the ecology unit in science. There will be a test next Thursday. Your child already has the study guide and I told them all to take their science books home over the weekend so they could look at the vocabulary if they had some time.

Miss Adams began the American Revolution. She has a test scheduled for Wednesday.

Target will be on Tuesday instead of Wednesday this week. Ms. Cone asked us to move it due to a fifth grade field trip on Tuesday.

If your child has a library book still out, they need to be returned or paid for ASAP. I think we have two still unaccounted for. Please ask your child.

Also, PLEASE return or pay for the school pictures ASAP. We have a couple of those out too.

A notice went out for volunteers to help with the fifth grade graduation ceremonies. The fourth grade does this each year. If you can, please help out. It is really a lot of fun.

We will be doing some fun days the last week of school. I will sent info soon.

          Week in the News

           March 31, 2008

SPECIALS: Mon. Tech, Tues. PE, Wed. Art, Thurs. PE, Fri. Music

We have finished up Shiloh and most everyone has taken the AR test. We don’t have much longer to achieve our 100% to goal. Please keep reading every night even when it is not assigned. We watched the movie Shiloh and had popcorn on Friday. The children want to read the next story in that series. We will decide this week when Target gets back from their field trip. While they are out of the classroom, we are going to read two short stories that deal with the American Revolution.

We are also working on CRCT review. I am sending home packets that should help everyone get ready for the types of questions that will be asked. The reading passages and math that I am sending are very much like the CRCT questions. We are also working in class with some test taking hints, etc.

In math the classes are working on geometric 3-d figures, faces, edges, vertices. We are also working with ordered pairs and locating them on a plane x and y axis. There is always review.

Science will move to ecology very soon. We will be finishing up space with eclipses this week. Miss Adams is done with the French and Indian War. There is a test that was going to be tomorrow, but has been moved to Thursday. It was noted in the agenda on Friday.

Please be sure to send in the Boosterthon money. Your child was given an envelope for the remaining balances on Friday. As the students were rewarded with prizes for their pledges, it is very important that as many as possible be collected. Thank you so much for your help with this.

MRS. RADEMACHER'S WEEK IN THE NEWS

MARCH 17, 2008

SPECIALS: Mon. Tech, Tues. PE, Wed. Art, Thurs. PE, Fri. Music

We have begun to read SHILOH. We will watch the movie as a special treat when we are done. I assigned some reading homework in the book this past week and gave a quiz on the pages the next day.  Please be sure that your child has completed any reading assignment during the week.

There are no new topics in grammar. We will just be reviewing and writing. Fourth grade will be taking a State writing test soon. It is assessed by a literacy team at the State level. This is a practice for the fifth grade test that is done next year, so we look at it very carefully.

We will begin the new classes in math toward the end of this week or maybe Monday. The teachers will be deciding that on Monday—well, today. I will let you know the teacher your child has inside the agenda.

Report cards go home on the 20th

Olivia Stewart was our Terrific Kid of the Month. Congratulations. Caitlin Oh was second runner up for fourth grade in the Still Writing Fair. Way to go, Caitlin. Antonette White-Johnson was our Character Kid.

Please remember to collect the Boosterthon donations. Each child has an envelope to put the money in. It needs to be turned in by Friday, the 21st.

We finished up George Washington’s Socks and all have taken the Accelerated Reader test. We are thinking about the CRCT now and I will doing some mini lessons in reading to help the children get ready for it. We have worked on some of these skills all along, but I will try to tie them in with how to use them on the test. We will be reading SHILOH next.

We have pretested for the next unit in math and have about a week left for the old unit. My class is going to working a great deal with word problems also to help us get ready for the CRCT. Much of this test is in word problem format. My end of the week tests are presented this way so that should have helped the children get ready.

We are writing journal piece from the viewpoint of Matt in our Socks book. This will be a portfolio piece but I will send you a copy. I hope you enjoyed reading the summaries and the snow stories. We have some really good writing going on in our classroom.

The science brochure was due today. We will be presenting them this week. There is a test on Tuesday over planets, revolution, and rotation. A study guide was given last Thursday. Please be sure to study tonight. Miss Adams is making her way to the end of colonization and on to the French and Indian War.

Thanks so much for the Boosterthon donations. Our class leads the entire school right now. WOW!!!!!!!!!!! The kids are very excited about it.

      WEEK IN THE NEWS
      February 20, 2008

We are working on George Washington’s Socks and will finish this next week.

Thank you for your help with getting the book reports in on time. Ms. Kitty will be teaching us how to create a bibliography and do research this week. We will also be attending an author visit.

Most of us have moved to decimals in math. Sometimes this is troublesome when trying to remember to line up the decimals in addition and subtraction because it just doesn’t look right. We tell the children to fill in the zeros no matter what so that they don’t forget when they have to subtract.

I have started on the space unit discussing and modeling how the Earth rotates and revolves and tilts all at the same time.  I have assigned the Space Brochure. The children have seen good and bad examples of the finished product. They have several sheets of information that should be in the science section of their binder. I am moving the due date from March 3 to March 10. Please make a note of this. It will be changed in the agenda.

We need for everyone to bring in ANOTHER Pringles can to make a constellation viewfinder.

Miss Adams continues to work on colonization. There will be a test on the Middle Colonies this Thursday.

I am out of town this week due to some family business. I will be back next Monday, so if you have any questions about the brochure I can get with you then.

SPECIALS: Mon. Art, Tues. PE, Wed. Music, Thurs. Tech, Fri. PE

We have all completed the Sign of the Beaver test for Accelerated Reader. We are beginning George Washington’s Socks. The focus will be on reading historical fiction. We will be talking about taking true events as a setting and putting a fictional story on top of it. The biography book report is due this Friday.

We are going to continue to work on writing. We have done quite a bit of it lately. Our grammar lessons are more in a review stage. You may have noticed that we are working on dictionary skills and will be getting into how to do research.

I have started on the space unit discussing and modeling how the Earth rotates and revolves and tilts all at the same time. It is a wonder that we aren’t all very confused.  Anyway, we will be working on constellations and moon phases. We need for everyone to bring in ANOTHER Pringles can to make a constellation viewfinder. We will also be making a travel brochure to a planet.  I will be sending the information in the couple of  weeks.  Miss Adams is finding herself in the middle colonies now and getting ready for the American Revolution.
